Help Us, Lord!!
Read 1 Peter Chapter 2
1Pe 2:24 He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Why did Christ come to earth? To provide us with a perfect sacrifice which we can offer as our own personal sacrifice for sins? Yes. Because we had no other way to receive forgiveness for our sins? Yes. To provide for us our only hope for eternal life? Yes! But it is so much more than that. Look at the message in this passage from the Holy Spirit, to us, through Peter.
We have not accepted Christ so that we can live like we want to. We have not believed in Him so that we can satisfy our fleshly desires at will, without fear of eternal damnation. He came so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. Christianity today is attempting to make Jesus’ death on the cross mean something which is totally not true. We hear “love, forgiveness, grace,” so much that it has become the only message in the minds of many “believers.” It has become an excuse to take sinfulness lightly; to prevent us from seeing it as a serious affront to a holy God.
One of the main purposes for His death on the cross is so that we might die to our sins. Dying to sins doesn’t mean that we are free to indulge in them, knowing we are forgiven. Dying to sins means that we exert every effort to avoid sinfulness. Dying to sins means that we covenant with God that we will refrain from freely indulging ourselves in selfish pleasures. We do not have the right to continue sinning once we have acknowledged Christ as our Savior. We made a covenant with Him to do away with such things. He dies so that we would be able to put aside those things.
But there’s more. Christ bore our sins in His body so that we could and would live for righteousness. How can we possible live for righteousness if we are continuing to plunge ourselves into the world of homosexual behaviors? That is an impossibility. We have a charge, a responsibility, to live as Christ would live. We have an obligation to allow Him to live through us. Is He living through us when we lust, or act out? Certainly not! Never in a million years does that mean we can continue to dabble in the gay life. Neither does it mean that we can open up those pornography sites and fill our minds with unholy images.
Our sins have left us wounded and broken. They were an albatross around our necks. But His wounds have healed us. We were like sheep going astray. By recognizing what Christ has done for us, we have “returned to our Shepherd, the Overseer of our souls.” We cannot return to what threatened to destroy us!
Christ died so that we will have the power to die to sins and live for righteousness. Anything else is unacceptable.
Prayer: Lord, I have miserably failed to heed the ideas from this lesson. I don’t know when I have been more saddened by my own sinfulness. Forgive me, and all SSA men and women who sense Your conviction right now. We have been healed, therefore we must quit taking the poison which made us sick.
