From One To Ten. Ouch!
Read Galatians Chapter 5
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Many devotionals, sermons, and Sunday School lessons have been written and taught on this passage. I suppose that every one of these fruits of the Spirit have been examined over and over by many Christians. So as to not let a good opportunity to do so again not pass by, here is another one.
One of the times that I read and meditated on this passage, I decided to rate myself on each of the fruits listed here, based on a scale of 1 to 10. I almost wish I had not. I said almost, because it is a good thing to check up on ourselves to see how we are doing in our spiritual walk. I wrote my ratings in a blank spot on that page in my bible (most bibles have one, because it’s the next to last chapter of Galatians. Therefore, every time I read Galatians, there it is, and I get a chance to see if there has been any improvement in any of the fruits listed.
May I issue a challenge for you to do the same thing? I will even give you some hints about my own ratings. My strengths, although not nearly as strong as they should be, were gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. I was shocked to see how low were my rating for joy and peace. Those have always been a problem for me; I should have better scores than I do.
As to SSA issues, I suppose that all of them have some effect on our ability to resist temptation. But perhaps faithfulness, self-control, and love would have the most impact on that. I fully believe that if we can mature sufficiently in our spiritual walk in all of these, getting close to “10” scores, we would then have little trouble resisting same-sex attractions.
Will you accept the challenge to rate yourself?
Prayer: Oh Lord, when will we ever become fully mature in our spiritual walk and our faith? Only You know. Please help us improve in producing the fruits mentioned in this passage from Galatians. It is our hearts’ desire, as You are aware. We want to become more like Christ every day.
