Who Can We Trust?
Read Isaiah Chapter 40
Isa 40:6 A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”
Oh, man believes he is so smart! One of the main reasons why so many reject God and Christ is that they think they can figure it all out without Him. Clearly, that is an errant way of thinking. Our God, Creator of everything and everyone, is the only entity who has enough wisdom and knowledge to have all the answers. It is the epitome of folly for a man to believe he can live life under his own set of standards and knowledge.
Pr 21:30 There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.
Isa 29:13 The Lord says: “These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is made up only of rules taught by men. 14 Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”
As we continue living on this earth, in these bodies, which wisdom are we relying upon? Can we trust the wisdom of any man who comes to us with a “new idea” in regard to God’s word? Can we trust the wisdom of a man who would tell us, “God didn’t really mean that?” Or, “God didn’t write that – it was not inspired by the Holy Spirit.” Which man has is so reliable that he has the ability to determine which parts of the bible are true and which are not? Who is so wise that we can confidently follow him, ignoring simple and obvious truths?
These verses from Isaiah have a powerful word for us. There is not a man who will survive this life. He is fallible, destined to fade away and die just as the grass and flowers. Our God controls it all. He decides when grass dies and flowers fade. He decides the fate of every man. He has the words of eternal life. Why, oh why, would any of us rely on anything or anyone but God and His Holy Word?
Ps 50:16 But to the wicked, God says: “What right have you to recite My laws or take My covenant on your lips? Ps 50:17 You hate my instruction and cast My words behind you. 18 When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers. 19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit. 20 You speak continually against your brother and slander your own mother’s son. 21 These things you have done and I kept silent; you thought I was altogether like you. But I will rebuke you and accuse you to your face.
“You thought I was altogether like you.” These words from verse 21 perfectly describe much of mankind today. Men think if an idea makes sense to them, it must be the same way God thinks. In the world in which we live, most SSA men and women have reasoned out their own way of thinking about homosexuality, and it makes sense in their own minds. “Surely if I have figured this out, it must be the same way God thinks.” Wrong! Our Lord says that homosexual behaviors are against His will; therefore, so be it! We must continue to think the way He thinks, believe as He instructs, and place our lives fully under His control – not allowing man’s way of thinking to derail us in any way.
Prayer: Oh, yes! Father, we submit totally to You. Forgive us when we forget Your wisdom and err in some decision we make in our lives. Lead us back onto Your pathway when that happens. We are truly grateful that there is a reliable source of truth, and that is You and Your word.
