Wanting To Be Where He Is.
Read John Chapter 12
Jn 12:26 Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me.
Do we want to serve Christ? Are we really interested in finding out what His purpose for us might be? How anxious are we to discover that, and to begin the work assigned to us? In order to serve Him, we first must make sure we are following Him. In order to serve Christ, we have to make sure we are where He is.
Let’s begin by thinking about the opposite. What are some places where we can be sure He cannot be found? Well, He isn’t sitting at a computer looking at pornography. He isn’t visiting gay bars or parks looking for a connection. He isn’t staring at a handsome man or beautiful woman, thinking about how attractive that person is. Those are some of the obvious places where He will not be found.
Okay, let us list some places that He will most likely be found. He can be found in most churches, although that number of churches may be rapidly decreasing. He can be found in most bible study groups, where men and women are sincerely seeking His guidance in their lives. He can even be found at our work places. He wants His children to be actively working and providing for themselves and their families.
Christ is found in many places, perhaps a few where we might not expect Him to be. How can we be sure we are following in His footsteps, and that we are walking alongside Him wherever we are? There will not be a definitive answer to that question, but there is a way that we can increase our chances that we are at His side.
That can be accomplished by being in constant contact with Him as we go about our daily routines and activities. When we make a decision to go somewhere, or do something, or say something, we have the privilege and responsibility to ask Him before we make our decision. It’s not really that difficult to do. For the most part, our lives will be consumed with necessary activities. As mentioned before, we must go to work. Most of us have home lives, where we must be engaged at least part of the day with family.
Actually, Christ is at most of the places where we go and do things. We almost have to make purposefully wrong choices to go places where He does not go. However, what can we do about the mistakes we make at our normal stops during the day? The key to that relies upon our heart’s attitude about serving Him. This verse from John gives heavy emphasis to the idea of serving. Whoever SERVES Me, My SERVANT will be with Me, My Father will honor the one who SERVES Me.
That’s the main point. When our mind and heart is totally absorbed with serving Christ, we won’t be going anywhere that He isn’t present. We won’t be doing anything at work, home, or the mall, that does not include His presence. He is everywhere that we are serving Him. It is when we begin to serve ourselves, that we are no longer where He is.
It’s going to take some practice and some determination, but we can always be where Christ is if we become more willing to be His servant. As long as our mind and heart are in tune with Him, we’re going to be walking with Him.
Prayer: Father, we want to always be where You are. We know when we slip away from Your presence, we just aren’t thinking rightly when that happens. Again, we ask You to help us keep ourselves always thinking of You and asking You for purpose and direction, all the time. We are weak, as You know even better than we do. Be our strength, Lord. Thank You.
