Who Is That Voice I Hear?
Read 1 Chronicles Chapter 21
1Ch 21:1 Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.
Is there any doubt in your mind? Does Satan have a lot of control over this world? Today’s scripture passage is pretty clear on this subject. A friend and I were talking recently about how much influence he has over believers. Well, he has a lot. Some people believe he cannot implant thoughts into our minds. Here is a good passage which says otherwise. He obviously influenced David to do something that was not in harmony with God’s will.
We are bombarded every day with images on the screen, on our TV’s, and the Internet. Those are not examples of what we are addressing. What happens when you or I are minding out own business, and suddenly an untoward thought enters our minds. It may be something that we drug up. But I believe that sometimes, that thought has entered our minds because our mortal enemy wants us to disappoint our Lord and Savior. If you believe otherwise, I respect that and have no intention of making a fuss over it.
What we cannot deny, is that David was coerced into doing something which was clearly against God’s intentions.
1Ch 21:7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so He punished Israel. 8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg You, take away the guilt of Your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
Not only did David’s failure to consult God cause harm to David himself, his disobedience brought great harm to all of Israel. Once again, we don’t understand God. We don’t know why the Lord didn’t confine His disciplines to David alone, and leave the rest of the country at peace. But that’s His business, nor ours.
What is happening today in the world of believers? Many are hearing a voice, one that they believe is from God. That voice has told them that God didn’t really mean what He said about homosexuality. That voice is telling them that God’s word has been mistranslated, or that the writers did not really understand what God was trying to say. That voice is telling them that we live in a different time than when those words were penned.
Guess who is the speaker of that voice? He is Satan, the one who deceives, lies, and distorts the truth. He is the one who has taken everything God created and attempted to twist it so that it doesn’t resemble the original creation. Guess what else is happening? Those who have heard that voice and failed to confirm it with their Creator are now leading others down a road of death and destruction. As they repeat the lies to a large group of uninformed listeners, some Christians will have to undergo discipline and many unsaved men and women will die in their disobedience.
As we hear voices today, we must give very careful consideration as to who is speaking. If that voice tells us anything which is contrary to God’s written word, it must be dismissed immediately. Let us never, ever, heed that voice that whispers in our ear, “Same-sex actions are okay. Go ahead and indulge.” That is not God’s voice.
And by the way, when we hear that voice tell us to open that porn site, who is telling us that? When we decide to cruise by that park we know about, who is whispering in our ear? When we hear a voice giving us plans to meet someone, who is the source of that thought? Well, sometimes, that voice is our own inner being. But sometimes, maybe more often than we think, that voice is Satan or one of his demons. He cannot inhabit our being, but he sure can speak to us, just as he did David. The really good news: we have the ability, through the Holy Spirit, to say “No!” to that voice.
Prayer: Lord, we know that Your voice never tells us anything that is not pure. We have no excuses. We know the truth, but sometimes we have clearly acted against what we know to be true. Forgive us for our many failures. Remind us of this devotion next time we hear that other voice.
