Who Are The Wise And Discerning?
Read Daniel Chapter 2
Da 2:19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven 20and said: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. 21 He changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. 22 He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him.
Daniel may have been the wisest man mentioned in all the bible. Yes, Solomon is mentioned as having greater wisdom than any man. But somewhere along the way, Solomon failed to live by the wisdom he had received from the Lord. The latter part of his life was not in keeping with God’s will. Daniel’s life doesn’t reflect a time of walking away from God. As far as we know, Daniel walked with God as close to perfection as is possible.
In this prayer, Daniel stated some powerful truths. Let’s look at some of them.
- Wisdom and power are His. – One of the most important truths that any Christian must know, is that God’s wisdom and power exceed that of any man who has ever walked the face of the earth (other than Christ). As long as the Christian is looking to God’s wisdom and power, he has a much less chance of going off track. It is folly to “figure out God” and determine that God didn’t really intend to convey that message. He and He alone has the words to eternal life.
- He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. – Since we know that our God is the supreme authority regarding wisdom and knowledge, we can also know that whatever He discloses to mankind is true. Therefore, when any man claims to have a “new” knowledge or piece of wisdom which is contrary to God’s word, we can be sure that he has not heard from God.
- He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. – We have to look at another important thought from this sentence. How would our Lord define those who are wise and the discerning? We can be sure that He would define them as men and women who accept only His truth, and refuse to believe anything which comes from a deceiving spirit. Therefore, we can know that anyone who has a word from the Lord will not be spouting off any “truth” which is contrary to His written word.
- He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him. – Only God knows what is true and what is false. He knows the difference between darkness and light. Further, light dwells with Him. Those who belong to Him will cling to Him. They will be unable to live in darkness, at least not for long, because God cannot dwell in darkness.
Here is a recent FB quote from someone I know and love.
“I was brought up as a Christian and I still believe in all the fundamental beliefs and values that Christianity teaches. I was even a Bible major in college for 3 years, so I know all too well what the Bible has to say (in English, Greek, AND Hebrew). So I’m fairly well qualified to state unequivocally that the hardcore opposition to gay equality many in this country is endorsed neither by the Bible, Jesus himself, nor true Christians.”
This young man is now living with his partner in a same-sex relationship. I desperately wish that he would return to God’s truth. It will take a miracle from God Himself to get him back onto God’s pathway. I only post this to show an example of how man’s wisdom is unreliable. He has attended three years of bible college, and somehow that qualifies him as the ultimate authority on God’s word.
It is sad to think that this 29 year-old believes he has been given a new word which overturns truth that has been revealed over centuries of studies and translations. Never mind that hundreds, probably thousands, of bible scholars who have spent their entire lifetimes studying original manuscripts in Hebrew and Greek have not been given this new “truth” – that homosexual behaviors are not sinful. It is so easy to see who are the wise and the discerning.
Prayer: Lord, help us! We are distressed, and mourn over our friends who are deceived. How long, O Lord, will this deception persist in our modern world? Father, save this world from our enemy, that father of lies, who seems to have an upper hand in our time.
