We Are Not Useless!
Read Hebrews Chapter 11
Heb 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. 32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
There are plenty examples in the bible of disreputable people being used by God in order to bring about His will. As we look over this list of Old Testament heroes, we see some of those. We see men and women who made mistake after mistake, and yet God chose them to carry out His will. We should particularly notice Rahab, a prostitute from Jericho, whom God used to save the Israelite spies who had come to scout out the city. Let us never believe that we SSA men cannot be used by God; that we have no purpose in His earthly plan. There are many same-sex attracted people who are children of God, and a good number of them are serving the Lord faithfully.
Our disbelief comes primarily because we are painfully aware of our weaknesses. We have struggled with our fleshly desires for all our lives. As a result, we have viewed ourselves as unworthy, unfaithful, useless, weak, and permanently marred. Let’s look at the list again. Samson? He made every mistake in the book. Nevertheless, God used him powerfully. He can and will do the same for us. We are not likely to make the splash on history that some of these men and women did, but God can and will use every man and woman who places their lives into His hands. Pretty simple, we just have to be willing.
I really like the part that says their “weakness was turned to strength.” Yes, our SSA weakness can become our strength. The man who perseveres in battling same-sex attractions will grow stronger and stronger over the course of his life. The spiritual battle that rages within the heart and mind of the Christian SSA man will someday turn his weakness into his strength. This warfare turns us into battle-tested Christians. We have drawn closer to the Lord because of what we face. We will learn the hard way how to resist temptation.
Let us resolve now to spend the remainder of our lives in total combat mode so that our enemy will be defeated to the fullest. Of all groups of people who have come to know Christ, we are among those who have the most to lose by shrinking back into willful sin. Our lives should be lived in such a way that will make the enemy sorry he ever messed with us. Our Savior wants to use us to show others that this enemy can be conquered. He likes to use imperfect people just like us; men who have been steeped in same-sex attractions. When our lives reflect His glory, we become a shining example to the world. Our weakness will have become our strength.
Prayer: We are amazed that You would give us a second thought. Why You would choose to use us is beyond our comprehension. But we are indeed grateful. We at one time believed we were worthless, but You have shown us more mercy and grace than we could ever have hoped for. Continue to cleanse us, outfitting us for our personal inner battles and for the battles ahead which we will face for Your Kingdom.
