We Are Legion
Read 2 Kings Chapter 6
2Ki 6:13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.” 14 Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. 15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” the servant asked. 16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
In today’s world, in our present time, there are times when we feel that we are outnumbered. As the gay activist agenda grows stronger and stronger, it seems that all we hear of are the numerous victories they are winning. They are successful in getting special laws passed to protect gay rights. The courts are overturning the will of the people, where votes were cast against gay marriage. City councils are passing special rights legislations without the consent of their constituents. The political correctness crowd besmirches anyone or any business that it wishes to label as “hateful.” It appears that God’s people are losing battles at every turn.
Lately, I have despaired over the condition of the United States. Even our president is publicly chiding Christians who oppose gay marriage and Christians who want the right to refuse to bake a gay wedding cake. He calls them “less than loving.” He is even hinting that reparative therapy should be made illegal. The New York Times wants to eliminate any reference in our bibles that would suggest that homosexuality is a sin. Are there any fronts where the truth is winning this battle? Maybe, but one by one they are getting shot down by our society.
There is a truth in today’s passage from 2 Kings which should help us. It is something which I often forget. It is a truth that will never fail. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Even if you or I were the only person on earth who holds to the traditional biblical view of homosexuality, you or I would still be in the majority. God’s forces will always outnumber the forces of those who attempt to pervert the truth from God’s word.
Joel 2:11 The LORD thunders at the head of His army; His forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey His command.
I don’t know of anything we can do to prevent ourselves from being saddened over the condition of our culture today. But we can soften our sadness to a great extent by remembering that we are in harmony with our Lord and His word. We may lose many battles, but the war has already been won. God’s forces, especially those within the unseen spiritual world, far outnumber and are more powerful than God’s foes.
Meanwhile, we must continue to love those who are living gay lives. While the world thinks that we “hate” them, we are actually showing them real love. It is an act of true love to warn our friends of the dangers which lie ahead of them. It isn’t hatred; it is love. It would be horrible for our friends to meet God at the end of their lives and realize that the following passage applies to them.
2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
Unfortunately, the truth has already been proclaimed to most of those we know, and the truth has been rejected. For many, all we can do is pray.
Prayer: Father, we know that Your word is the ultimate and only authority. We know that we are connected to Your truth, even though we have at times disobeyed that very truth. Please help us to be steadfast, holding on to truth to the end. And once again we pray for our friends who have rejected truth. We thank You for reminding us that we are in the majority, not the minority.
