Read Mark Chapter 14
Mk 14:60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are You not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against You?” 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked Him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned Him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at Him; they blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took Him and beat Him.
Truth is often divisive. In this passage, Jesus stated solid, irrevocable truth. Those who heard it found it very objectionable and chose to oppose and hate it. When real truth is revealed, man has basically three choices. He can accept it, ignore it, or oppose it. The truth about God and His word are the most important truths revealed to mankind, ever! You and I are among those who have chosen wisely. We have decided to believe and accept God, His Son, and His word. We may have reluctantly believed what He has said about homosexuality, but we have acquiesced to His word nonetheless.
In our world today, it is very easy to choose one of the other options. It seems that mankind has a great ability to reject those truths with which he disagrees, either by ignoring them or by opposing them. Surely that is true in regard to the issue of homosexuality. Many wish so badly that God’s word is incorrect on this subject, that they will violently oppose it or view it as nonsense when confronted with the truth. Either way, it is a somber thought – sadly, the truth has been rejected.
There was plenty of evidence in Jesus’ time to prove that He was the Savior. The numerous miracles made it impossible to not know that He was the Christ. Nonetheless, those who did not want to believe refused to believe. Today, many reject the truth about homosexuality not because there is no evidence that it is harmful (spiritually and bodily), but for the simple reason that they WISH it were not true. Also unfortunately, there are plenty of “Christian” leaders today who gladly supply them with a nodding “okay.”
Opposition to truth will not change truth. Pretending that God has not spoken against it will not change the truth. We only have one reasonable response to God’s word – accept it, believe it, and live it. Those who oppose it and fail to repent in this life are sealing their fate. They will join the ranks of those in this passage who condemned Jesus to death. To reject God’s word is the same as rejecting Him. He is either truthful in all He says, or He is a liar. You and I know which is correct.
Mt 10:34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Lk 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law
In our present world, God’s word about homosexuality is quickly causing major division among mankind. We see a sword coming down, cutting through society, dividing them into two distinct camps – those who continue to know that homosexuality is a sin against God, and those who believe it is no longer a sin or never was a sin. The world is lining up on both sides. The two parties will never agree. We know which group we must identify with. Even if it were possible we were wrong on this subject (and it is not), it would be better to err on the side of caution rather than the side of risk.
Prayer: Lord, keep us firmly planted in Your truth. We long for every man to be completely in tune with You and Your word. But we know that will never be. Please continue to reveal truth, giving mankind every opportunity to accept what You have said. Give us courage, and the words to say, whenever we have a chance to speak into the lives of our friends who have been deceived.
