The Never-Failing Treasure Hunt
Read 1 Chronicles Chapter 28
1Ch 28:9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.
Ac 17:26 From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
Ps 25:14 The LORD confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them.
I wish I had known this truth when I was 9 years old, or 14, or 22, or 30! I spent much of the first half of my life seeking God, but at the same time not knowing the promises from these scripture passages. Our Lord will reward any and all who seek Him. We don’t have to plead and beg for Him to “discover” us as we search for Him and His truth. All it takes for a man to find God is to sincerely seek Him. There is a Southern Gospel song entitled, “Don’t Pass By.” It is a beautiful song with a beautiful melody. I like the song, but its message implies that it is possible for Jesus to pass by someone who is seeking Him. Not so.
There is a caveat, though. When a man seeks God, he must be seeking Him with a sincere heart and pure motives. The above passages tell us that. Many men seek God with incorrect attitudes and motives. Some seek Him with preconceived notions of what He is like. When He does not ‘measure up’ to what they wish to find, He is rejected. When a man seeks God, he comes with a heart willing to accept and believe whatever he finds. It won’t matter to him if God is who he wants Him to be. It won’t matter to him if God tells him that something he loves must be given over to Him and abandoned.
Despite that qualification, when a man seeks God humbly, sincerely, and with a contrite heart, God allows Himself to be found. Anyone who is reading this most likely has sought Him in the right way. I doubt that anyone who has not sought Him with correct motives and in all sincerity would be reading a devotional for SSA men and women who seek victory over same-sex attractions. It takes a really sincere seeker to be willing to submit to God’s views on homosexuality. That would be the epitome of a man or woman who is truly seeking God!
The SSA man or woman who is unwilling to agree with God on this subject will not seek God with sincerity. He does not like what he finds, therefore he rejects God and God’s word. Here are some verses which define and address that person.
Ps 10:4 In his pride the wicked does not seek Him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
Hos 7:10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against him, but despite all this he does not return to the LORD his God or search for Him.
Once we have found Him, we must continue to seek Him and His truth for the remainder of our lives. We will never know enough about our Lord that we will be able to sit back and relax. The depth of His personhood is so beyond the scope of our finite minds, we must continue to seek and believe. That’s called growing in wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual maturity. That’s called growing in Him through His presence within us.
Prayer: Lord, give everyone reading this, all SSA men and women, complete confidence that they have found You. Do not allow our enemy to deceive and lie to anyone who sincerely seeks You. Do not allow anyone to agonize as I did for so long, believing that You do not reward those who seek You. Thank You for the promise of Your word, which gives us an irrefutable promise in that regard.
