Searching For Truth
Read Acts Chapter 17
Ac 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Ac 17:21 (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)
Each of us should be searching for truth. We live in a world which has gotten far away from the truth of God and His word. Therefore, it is easy for mankind to go off track and believe lies. Our enemy is the great deceiver and has done a magnificent job of leading men astray. In Acts chapter 17, we see two completely opposite ideas about how to search for truth.
In the first example, the Bereans searched the right way. When some idea came before them, they examined the scriptures to determine if what is said is true. There are way too many church-goers who blindly listen to what is said from the pulpit, or from some famous author, and fail to check it out against the bible. That is mainly due to the fact that few Christians really know the word; most have simply accepted what was said because it takes a lot of work and a lot of time to diligently search and study scripture.
Kudos to the Bereans. No one was going to fool them into believing something which did not conform to God’s instructions. This must always be our guideline. All which is told us must be checked against God’s Holy Word, whether it comes from the pulpit, a small bible study group, or from one of the many Christian books which line the shelves of bookstore across the land. There is just too much error out there to take any chances.
The second example from this chapter is the opposite end of the spectrum. The Athenians loved to search for truth, but their searching did not include authoritative resources. They loved to listen to Paul, because they loved to hear new ideas. But their problem is that they had no way of proving anything that was said or written. As a result, they never could land upon a truth which satisfied the longing in their hearts for truth. No matter what they heard, they remained unlearned.
Just as we studied in yesterday’s devotion, there is one and only one source of Truth. It is the word of God. It must be the foundation of all we hear, read, and believe. The more we know about the bible, the less likely we can be led astray. There’s too much at stake to be careless in this regard.
We cannot end today’s thoughts without application to our SSA. You could write the ending for today. Many new thoughts and books have been written in an attempt to justify homosexual behavior. No matter how hard man tries to justify what is clearly wrong, they cannot change the word of God. It will always remain true.
Prayer: Lord, do not allow us to be slack in our pursuit of truth. Give us the desire and time we need to thoroughly search Your word, so that we cannot be deceived and led astray. Please take the blinders off the eyes of those who are currently on the wrong road. Thank You.
