Overcoming Death, And Other Stuff
Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 15
1Co 15:53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Have you ever felt the sting of death? Obviously, we haven’t felt it in the way mentioned here. We have conquered death by believing in Jesus as our Savior. In doing so, we have also turned over to Him our sexuality. We have accepted what His word says about sin, and our hearts wish to obey all that He commands. Our missteps in obedience are but a hiccup along the way to our sanctification and our final victory over death.
Verse 53 can give us another perspective on what we have done. By submitting to Christ, we have begun the process of clothing our perishable selves with the imperishable. That pathway of homosexual behavior was the pathway to eternal death. Our mortal selves were headed down a road to death and destruction. Christ enlightened us by revealing truth to us, and we heeded His call. We are now immortal. Thereby, death has been swallowed up in victory. We are victorious over death because of the work Christ accomplished on the cross.
As believers and followers of Christ, we are encouraged in verse 58 to continue walking the pathway which God has shown us. We must stand firm as the end time draws near, whether the end is our physical death, or Christ’s return to earth to call us home. We must let nothing move us. The unsaved world wants to move us. False teachers are trying their level best to convince us that we are fools for taking God’s word so literally. Society wants us to quit opposing gay marriage and the relationships therein. Our government wants to silence our “hate speech.” They want us to bake cakes to celebrate rebellion against God. We cannot give in to these forces, no matter how difficult it becomes.
No matter how loud and powerful the opposition grows, our labor in the Lord will not be in vain. We must continue to spread the truth to anyone who will listen. It is becoming more and more difficult to avoid discussion over the issue of homosexuality and gay marriage. We don’t have to thump anyone over the head with our bibles, but we must speak the truth in love at every available opportunity. There is just too much at stake, both for those we meet, and for ourselves, as we remain strong and steadfast, clinging to God’s word. We must not remain silent when God presents us with a platform to speak for Him.
This message is for all of us:
Ac 18:9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.
That death that we have overcome, through Christ, is available to all who will hear and heed the truth. I do not believe that anyone will spend eternity in hell because we failed to speak. But we are commanded to speak, to represent Christ and God at every chance we are afforded. We must obey God and spread His word, no matter what it costs us.
Prayer: Take away from us the fears which come when we face opposition. Most of us fear rejection, and most of us want to be liked by all men. We clearly see that is not possible as we live in a world which lives in opposition to You, Lord. Show us those moments when we can speak on Your behalf. And do not allow us to speak anything other than the words You have given us.
