Our Quest for Righteousness
Read Proverbs Chapter 11
Pr 11:18 The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. 19 The truly righteous man attains life, but he who pursues evil goes to his death.
Pr 11:27 He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it.
In God’s world, a man is allowed to get what he pursues. These two verses pretty much state that, and summarize man’s rewards for his search.
“He who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. The truly righteous man attains life.” This is not an indication that we work for our salvation; it shows that God rewards those who genuinely seek righteousness. It’s not that the quest for righteousness leads to works that save us; it means that the sincere quest for righteousness leads us to Christ.
“The wicked man earns deceptive wages.” “He who pursues evil goes to his death.” This is the opposite of the previous paragraph. A man is not lost because he pursues evil; he is lost because he does not pursue a righteousness that leads to Jesus Christ. Just in case anyone is not yet convinced, look at this from the New Testament:
Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Here is our application for today. In our SSA world, we have often despaired because we seem to be making little or no progress in our quest for righteousness. On the one hand, we desperately want righteousness and we have spent much of our lives in its pursuit. There is really good news. God will reward our quest for righteousness. There are way too many promises in His word which bear that out. We must never give up on our pursuit. Our lives must be a continual search for God’s truth, for it will set us free. Is our Lord one who puts a “carrot” out in front of us and then does not allow us to catch it? Certainly not!
Ps 69:32 The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!
1Ch 16:10 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
Hos 10:12 Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until He comes and showers righteousness on you.
Mt 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Eph 6:7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.
Enough already! Our Savior does not and will not hide from those who diligently and sincerely seek Him. Therefore, do not despair or give up hope. We who seek Him and seek deliverance from same-sex attractions will be rewarded for our diligent pursuit. As we seek righteousness, we will find it – first in the Person of Jesus Christ, and then through His working out our sanctification. It is as good as done!
Tomorrow we will see what it means to sincerely seek righteousness. We will see the difference between half-hearted seeking and truly seeking.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord. For so many years I believed I was in pursuit of the unattainable. Please assure every SSA man and woman that their pursuit of You and Your righteousness will definitely NOT be in vain.
