Only A Few Responded
Read 2 Chronicles Chapter 30
2Ch 30:6 At the king’s command, couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and from his officials, which read: “People of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that He may return to you who are left, who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria. 7 Do not be like your fathers and brothers, who were unfaithful to the LORD, the God of their fathers, so that He made them an object of horror, as you see. 8 Do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were; submit to the LORD. Come to the sanctuary, which He has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that His fierce anger will turn away from you. 9 If you return to the LORD, then your brothers and your children will be shown compassion by their captors and will come back to this land, for the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn His face from you if you return to Him.” 10 The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but the people scorned and ridiculed them. 11 Nevertheless, some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem. 12 Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD.
Only a small number of the Israelites responded to Hezekiah’s call to repentance and worship in Jerusalem. King Hezekiah was one of the few good kings. He made some mistakes, but his heart was turned to the Lord for the most part. He realized that Judah and Israel’s recent troubles were because the people and their leaders had deserted God and His commands. Therefore, he invited all the tribes to come to Jerusalem to repent and to reestablish a worshipful spirit to their Lord. His invitation to the nation was rejected by most of the people. We find often in scripture that only a small number of people are sincere believers.
Among those who claim to know and worship the Lord today, the percentage of real believers is more often than not in the minority. We have examined on other devotions, how we who have not fallen prey to false beliefs on the subject of homosexuality are a very small percentage among SSA men and women. Even many who at one time believed correctly have gone over to the majority opinion. It is not a hard and fast rule, but when a believer finds himself among a minority group, he is likely to be 100% right with God. The New Testament also has a word about that.
Mt 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
In the Chronicles passage, the numbers of Israelites who repented and returned to God were only a small remnant of the population. The Matthew passage indicates that to be true as well. I am going out on a limb now. The number of Americans who claim to be Christian stands around 80%. Considering how many men and women approve of abortion, same-sex marriage, and gay identity would tell us that the number of true believers is much lower than 80%. Why are believers tolerating their church leaders who approve of homosexual behaviors? Why aren’t the majority of churches speaking out against abortion? Why do our churches no longer warn their congregations against all sins?
We are without question a small minority, we who still know that homosexuality is a sin against God. We can take comfort in knowing that Godly men and women have always been a minority. People who worship God in Spirit and in truth are always at odds against society in general, and false Christianity as well. Verse 8 implores men to do not be stiff-necked, to submit to the Lord, to be faithful to the Lord, to come to His sanctuary, and thereby avoid the anger of God.
We SSA men and women are a very imperfect people, making many mistakes along the way as we attempt to serve God. We must continue to seek God, to study and meditate on His word, and even if an “angel from Heaven” spreads a word that is contrary to God’s word, we must remain steadfast.
2Co 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
Prayer: Once again, we pray that You guard our hearts, that we will not be deceived and join the majority. Your servants are always a minority. We acknowledge that the only reason why we hold fast to Your word is because Your Spirit will not let us depart. Lord, have mercy on us, and also on all who have been deceived.
