Read 2 Corinthians Chapter 11
2Co 11:2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him. 3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
The Corinthians had a different problem than we do. They had some access, although limited, to the Old Testament scriptures. They had little way of knowing the truth, other than just believing what Paul said about God and Christ. On the plus side, they likely had heard stories of Jesus’ miracles, and maybe had seen or heard of some of the miracles that the apostles and disciples had done through the Holy Spirit. Their best evidence of truth came through the Holy Spirit’s presence within their hearts. It is God’s Spirit who reveals truth to every man. Many saw and heard of the truth, but not all believed.
We are under a different scenario. We not only have the Old Testament, we also have New Testament scriptures from which we can affirm what is true and what is false. When someone presented false testimony to the Corinthians, for the most part, they had to rely on Paul’s preaching and teaching as their access to truth. Paul warned them against the danger of believing things that were contrary to what he had taught them.
As we read and hear of all the different things modern man says about homosexuality, much of what we are hearing is directly opposed to the written word of God. In effect, most of mankind wants you and I to think differently than what we read in our bibles. They are preaching a Jesus other than the Jesus Paul preached. They are trying to spread a different spirit than the one we know to be true. In order to believe same-sex sexual encounters are okay with God, a man or woman must believe a different gospel than the one revealed in God’s holy word. Christ was a part of the process in all of our Spirit-inspired revelations. He and God agree on everything. They are in union, 100 % in agreement, on all points of truth.
Paul fears that the Corinthians would be deceived in the same way that Eve was deceived. By the serpent’s cunning, our world has come to believe a completely false narrative about homosexuality. Eve was deceived by Satan’s question, “Did God really say……?” (Genesis 3:1). Can we think of a more apt parallel with homosexuality in our present world? We are being bombarded with, “Did God REALLY say?” The comparison is eerily the same.
We are the bride of Christ. We will be pure virgins in His presence. Paul wanted to present the Corinthians to Christ as pure virgins to Him. I won’t even pretend to understand the enormity of that picture. It is far beyond my understanding. Nevertheless, there is a powerful painting in verse 2, and we must not believe anything which could sully that moment when it happens. Paul warned the Corinthians to remain steadfast in truth. If it was important to them, it is equally important for us.
Prayer: Lord, prevent us from departing from our sincere and pure devotion to You. We want to always believe and follow the truth, Your truth, and nothing else. Our enemy keeps whispering in our ear, “Did God really say……….?” Don’t let us be deceived by his cunning methods. Keep Your word ever in the forefront of our minds and hearts.
