Marching On, Marching On
Read Romans Chapter 13
Ro 13:11 And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
Maybe it’s just my age, but I believe the urgency of the message from this passage is more applicable than ever. Do we understand “the present time?” Are we alert to all that is happening today? I know – Paul truly believed that the time was near, and Christians throughout the ages have always believed the time is near. Referring back to my age, I can see a different side of this truth than any of you. People my age think more about this than younger people.
I will come to a point. Whether there are only a 10-20 years of left in life, or if the Lord is getting ready to come back tomorrow and end it for all of us, our salvation is definitely nearer than when we first believed. Paul’s warning is applicable to every one of us. “The night is nearly over, the day is almost here.” As believers who understand the present time, it is time for us to wake up from our slumber. As we awaken, what should be foremost in our minds?
1. It is time for us to put aside our deeds of darkness. How sad we will be if that time comes and we are engaged in some unholy same-sex act, or are unrepentant over recent acts! The deeds of darkness have no place in our lives. They do nothing to affect lives positively for eternal purposes. Our deeds of darkness send a message to a lost and dying world that Christ doesn’t make a difference in our lives.
2. It is time for us to put on the armor of light. The only way we can make a good impact on today’s fleshly world is to become who Jesus asks us to be. We have a message for those who remain entrenched in same-sex addictions. The message is that there is a better life that awaits the man and woman who abandons their flesh, turning it all over to Jesus. That one leads to life; the one they are leading ends in death.
3. Let us behave decently. Let us no longer participate in fantasy lusts, pornography of any description, and all of our sexual immorality. We know that our participation into that world has only brought us despair, depression, and hopelessness. It leads to nothing good. So why are we hanging on to it as though it were some precious jewel?
4. Finally, we must be concerned with one thing, and only one thing; Jesus Christ and His gospel and message. If our entire day is spent thinking of Christ, our minds will have no time to be thinking about gratifying the desires of our sinful nature.
Time is fleeting. Even if you are in your early twenties, I can tell you that when you get to your seventies, you will wonder where all the years went. I have seen men in their fifties, sixties, and seventies still trolling the parks hoping to find a sexual connection. Is that your future? Do you really want to be one of those older men when you reach that age? Of course not! Then this message is for you – the hour has come for you to wake up, put aside the deeds of darkness, and clothe yourself with the armor of light. Time is fleeting!
Prayer: My prayer today is for every Christian man and woman who continues to falter. I know they are wanting to be done with their sinful nature; if that were not so, they would not be seeking You and Your answers to their problems. I also pray for myself, that I will always be willing to clothe myself with the Lord Jesus Christ. Help all of us to see the urgent need to put away our nefarious deeds, once and for all, and live for You.
