Listen To The Voice Of Wisdom
Read Proverbs Chapter 22
Pr 22:17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, 18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. 19 So that your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you. 20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, 21 teaching you true and reliable words, so that you can give sound answers to him who sent you?
If someone is truly searching for wisdom, he does not have to read the bible for very long before something becomes very apparent. Wisdom is found in the teachings and words in scripture. From Proverbs to Psalms, to the teachings of Jesus and the writings of Paul, wisdom jumps off the page and into a man’s heart, if he is truly searching. If someone is looking to justify his errant behaviors, he will find a bunch of nonsense in God’s words and he will reject it. It’s all decided in the heart of man – is he seeking truth, willing to accept what he finds even if it isn’t what he wants to hear, or is he looking for something which will justify him and agree with what he wants to hear. Another way of saying it is – which seeker is looking for God? The one who is looking for God will find Him in the pages of His word. The one who isn’t looking for God will be unable to detect His presence in the bible.
The writer of Proverbs spelled it out pretty clearly. If a man is ready to trust in the Lord, he will listen to and heed the word of wisdom written in the pages of God’s word. The true seeker does the following:
- He pays attention to the sayings of the wise. The one who seeks wisdom recognizes it when it appears before him.
- He applies what is taught to his heart. Knowledge without application to one’s life is worthless. Knowledge must be incorporated into one’s way of living in order for it to be of any benefit.
- He recognizes sayings of wise counsel and true knowledge. They are easy to recognize because they are common sense solutions to common circumstances.
- He recognizes true and reliable words. They give a man the ability to understand and explain the best way to live life.
Wisdom is closely associated with common sense. Both are far more valuable than intelligence. The simple man can understand and apply common sense and wisdom to his life. Therefore, wisdom and common senses are not commodities which are available only to the most intelligent among us. They are available to every man. That’s why a child can come to faith in God and Jesus Christ, while the highly intelligent can look straight at God and see only nonsense.
Here’s something that we may have not considered. Sin is more often, and maybe always, in conflict with common sense. Naturally, we are going to take homosexual behaviors as our example. Is there any wisdom or common sense in homosexual behaviors? Using the electrical plug as our analogy, one can easily see that homosexual behaviors belie common sense and wisdom.
There is one other example that we must look at. Does wisdom and common sense tell us to listen to God, or listen to man? The writer of Proverbs said, in verse 19, that the sayings of the wise (wisdom) will lead a man to trust in the Lord. The opposite point would be that to ignore wisdom is to reject the Lord. Our final thought is this – on the issue of SSA, who is the most trustworthy, God or man? Wisdom and common sense scream into our ears, thoughts, minds, and hearts, “God is the answer. His wisdom is totally trustworthy, while evidence of the failure of mankind’s wisdom lies scattered all around us. It practically slaps us in the face at every turn!”
Prayer: Father, we know all this. Yet, we have failed many times to listen to Your wisdom. The result has always been disastrous. Forgive us. We now resubmit ourselves to listening to and heeding Your wisdom and truth. Thank You for loving us too much to allow man’s wisdom to work for us.
