Just A Little Twist Here And There
Read Galatians Chapter 1
Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
It is a serious matter for mankind to alter God’s word; His truth. In this first chapter in Galatians, Paul makes that very clear. If there is any doubt, take another look at verses 8 and 9. “Let him be eternally condemned.” That doesn’t sound like the kind of “grace” we hear bandied around today. We have become so focused on grace that we have forgotten that sin is serious. More pointedly – we have forgotten that God’s word does not change. The seriousness of homosexual sin that was pronounced in the Old Testament and reaffirmed in the New Testament has been minimized by our world and also some who proclaim themselves to be Christians, particularly over the past few decades.
There are some who would say that Paul was specifically targeting the method of salvation that had been previously taught. That may be so. But in his letters, Paul regularly called out many who had deserted any truth from God’s word. He called out anyone who strayed from the truth no matter which truth was the issue of the moment. So the question we must ask is, “What constitutes a ‘perversion of the gospel of Christ’?” Further, “What constitutes ‘turning to a different gospel’?”
My definition – and you may disagree, is that ‘perversion of the gospel,’ and ‘turning to a different gospel,’ would include any teaching which is contrary to the written word of God. You know where this is going. If any of us are spreading the word that homosexual acts are not offensive in the eyes of God, we are guilty of perverting the gospel and inventing a different gospel. Let us look at today’s verses and give serious consideration to Paul’s writing. Here are some other warnings against teaching a perverted truth.
Pr 10:17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
2Co 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
2Pe 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
“Many will follow their shameful ways and will BRING THE WAY OF TRUTH INTO DISREPUTE.” The false teachers of today, claiming that homosexual behaviors are not sin, have brought the way of truth into disrepute. Is there any biblical truth today which has been more subject to discussion and dissention in our time?
Prayer: God have mercy on all who have perverted Your truth!
