It’s A War!!
Read Psalm Chapter 24
Ps 24:3 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face, O God of Jacob.
If this passage were the only word from God we had, we would be in a pickle. None of us have clean hands and a pure heart. And we cannot deny that we have lifted up our souls to that idol of homosexual behavior, which is most certainly a false hope. From New Testament scriptures, we know that there is One who has accomplished on our behalf all that we need to claim the blessings promised in verse 5. However, verse 6 contains an instruction which we do have the ability to implement. We can ‘seek Him.’ We have been graciously been given that ability by our Father.
When we recognize our transgressions, through the conviction of the Spirit, we have the option to seek the one and only Source for the solution to our dilemma. We can and must seek our Lord and Savior. There are very few Christians who realize how difficult their spiritual warfare is. In fact, there are many Christians who are completely unaware that there IS a spiritual warfare raging. For every moment of our lifetimes, our enemy is continually heaping upon us those things and circumstances which are designed to thwart our salvation and sanctification.
Picture a balance scale – the type which has two sides hanging on a fulcrum. Whichever side has the most weight overpowers the other side, and therefore ‘wins’ the battle. Our enemy constantly is placing weights against us on the other side in an attempt to overpower us, in hopes of gaining control of our lives. On our side, we have an obligation to place some spiritual ‘weights’ to counteract our enemy’s power. Yes, I know that Jesus will in the end place all the weights needed in order for us to be victorious. Meanwhile, He expects us to be actively involved in the battle. What are the ‘weights’ for which we are responsible?
All of them come under the heading of consistently and persistently seeking God. There are no scriptures which indicate we can simply sit back and watch the spiritual battle as though we were only spectators. As a part of our obligation to seek God, here are some things which are imperative.
1. We are to put on our armor, as stated by Paul. Read Ephesians 6:10-20 to recall all the pieces of armor which are necessary for spiritual warfare.
2. We seek God through our bible study and prayer. As stated many times in these devotions, bible study is more than simply reading scripture. It is seriously meditating on the messages and HEEDING those messages. It does no good to only give scripture a passing glance. Neither does it do any good to learn truth and push it aside.
3. We also seek Him by being continually aware of His presence. Most of our transgressions would be avoided if we consulted Him in every situation we face in our day.
4. We are to train our minds to ‘think on things above.’ We will never be victorious if we bombard our minds with worldly things. We will never be free from SSA addiction if we are filling our minds with porn or lusts. Whatever we fill our minds with will be what controls most of our speech and actions. We absolutely must fill our minds with the things of God.
There are many others we could list. If we are steadfastly placing these items on our side of the ‘scale,’ our lives will be much more likely to correctly represent Christ. We will sin less. We will be building our spiritual house, storing up spiritual blessings for eternity. To consistently seek God will bring about the promises mentioned in verse 5. We will indeed receive blessing from the Lord. And we will receive vindication from our Savior. Not that our works save us, they do not. But God promises those things to all who seek Him.
Most SSA men and women moan and wail over the difficulty of overcoming same-sex attractions. But few of them are implementing the steps listed above. Every time someone I mentor informs me of a failure, it is almost a certainly that they have not been adding these ‘weights’ to their side of the scale. It is a sure bet that our enemy has been piling a heaping load in the other side.
Prayer: Lord, we are a lazy bunch of children. We don’t like to have to work. Yet, You plainly state that we are to be working out our salvation. Open our think skulls, Lord, and make us more aware that we have hard work to do. It’s not fun either, so we ask You to give us the courage, ability, and desire to accomplish what it will take to make us an active participant in this war.
