Hanging On To Truth
Read 1 John Chapter 2
1Jn 2:24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what He promised us—even eternal life. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in Him.
So many SSA men and women today are falling away from the truth. It grieves my heart to see them running toward what will destroy them. This scripture gives men a timely warning against pulling away from God’s truth. But our thoughts for today will not be directed toward them. Those who are running away from truth are not likely to be reading this, or willing to listen to anything that contradicts what they wish to believe. Instead, we will take this passage as a warning to ourselves. Let none of us harbor the idea that we are immune to the world’s message.
Every SSA man I have ever mentored has, at one time or another, known and believed the truth about homosexuality. I have mentioned before that I was aware from a very early age that there was something disturbingly wrong with homosexual actions. I knew that even before I knew that the bible contained warnings against such things. Then came the time when I discovered what God’s word had to say on the subject. In effect, God’s word was confirming what His Spirit had already shown me. I imagine you can identify with that idea.
When a man decides to embrace his same-sex attractions, one of two things must take place. Either he must completely disbelieve everything about God and declare himself to be an atheist, or he must distance himself from certain teachings from God’s message. In the latter case, he must pull himself away from God’s statements about homosexuality and conclude that bible translators have been mistaken on the subject (for thousands of years).
This passage from 1 John must be firmly embedded within our spiritual minds. We must determine that we continue to believe what we believed “from the beginning.” We must remain true to what the Spirit has taught us from the start. We must not attempt to ignore or reinvent the truth from God’s word. It must remain with us, firmly grasped by our entire being. Many of those who have pulled away from ‘what they heard from the beginning’ have now become the false teachers alluded to in verse 26. Verse 27 contains a similar warning. We have been taught by the Holy Spirit what is right and what is wrong. He made sure that from the very first we knew the truth about homosexuality. The message He gave us from the beginning is the real message. The ‘new message’ is counterfeit.”
If we wish to remain in Him, we must never deny the truth from His Spirit or the truth from His word. We have a great promise written by the apostle John from the lips of our Creator. If we stay true to what we heard, we will gain eternal life. Our determination to remain in truth does not save us, but it proves that we are saved. The true believer will do just that. He may stray for a short time, but he will not remain detached from God’s truth.
Prayer: Lord, our prayer for today is that You continually remind us of this passage. Do not let us listen to the world’s wisdom. We know that Your wisdom is far above and superior to anything which man can say, or add to your truth. Help us to remain in the truth You first brought to us; that our same-sex attractions must be resisted at all costs. Thank You for helping us believe and persevere.
