Finally – Our Solution!

Finally – Our Solution!

Read Colossians Chapter 3
If any of us really want to know what to do in order to defeat our same-sex attractions, today’s verses have something powerful to say to us. We are far too quick to believe we are helpless and defenseless against the temptations which come our way.

Col 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
From these two verses, it sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? Well, it is simple, and then it’s not. We will look at both sides of the coin.
If we were to completely adhere to the instructions from the verses, we would indeed be victorious over every temptation which our enemy places in our pathway. If everything we do, in word and deed, were done in the name of our Lord, giving thanks to Him as we spoke and acted, we would never again act out on our same-sex desires. We would also have complete control over our lusts. If everything we did were accomplished as though we were doing it for Christ, we would be done with not only our same-sex attraction sins, but every other willful sin.
The problem we face, which makes our task not quite as easy as we noted above, is that it is difficult to do, think, and say only those things which are done for our Lord. It takes a lot of spiritual work, much diligent effort, to think about God and His will all day long every day. We must become 24/7 spiritual warriors to accomplish this feat. Wait a minute; maybe that’s not our problem. Our problem is likely that most of us are unwilling to put forth that kind of effort into spiritual warfare. We need to come to grips with the fact that our problem with sin is our fault and our fault alone.
We have the ability to fight spiritual battles. We have the ability to train our minds to concentrate on pleasing and working for our Savior all day long every day. It is not an easy thing to do, but we do have the ability to do so. Let’s face it; we are lazy. Yes, we are tired and we are weak. But we rarely admit that we simply do not want to put forth the amount of effort into our spiritual battles which is necessary for us to be victorious on a consistent basis. We will occasionally do what we have to do for a while, maybe even a long while. But we have this tendency to eventually give in to our desires.
Each of us need to wake up each morning with a renewed determination to spend all of our waking moments engaged in the work of our Lord. Our first prayer of the day, before we even get out of bed, should be a prayer asking God to help us train our minds to “think on things above” all day. Whatever we do – work, school, play, Facebook, or anything else – should be done with Christ in mind. If we will make that our daily goal, it will eventually become second nature to us.
This is something we can accomplish. We must begin to know and believe that our sexual purity is not out of the realm of possibility. We can do it. If it were not possible, Paul would not have asked it of the Colossians. Before we close, here are two other passages of scripture which also confirm that God has given us the ability.
Pr 16:3 Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

1Co 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Prayer: Lord, we know this truth. We also know that we often don’t want to listen to it. We are spiritually lazy, and we confess that as sin against You. Help us to desire to obey these four passages all day long every day. We are weak; help us in our weakness.
