Read Psalm Chapter 115
Ps 115:2 Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” 3 Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him. 4 But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; 6 they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; 7 they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. 8 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.
There is a counterfeit culture in this world. It has existed from the first moment that man sinned for the first time. When our Father created all things which exist, He created them in complete perfection. Since the fall of man, mankind has been trying to duplicate God’s perfect world, all the while failing to consult the only One who possesses the instruction book. Everything man attempts to do, without consulting God, is counterfeit. It is all a complete failure.
This passage is a very simplistic example of that counterfeiting. Nations (or peoples) who do not worship God look for ways to go around His perfection and create something for themselves as a substitute for the real thing. Just as the nations in this passage made idols which were totally incapable of aiding them in any way, we see the same thing happening today. The idols that man has created in our time are not physical manifestations to worship; they are worse. The idols man creates today seem to have the “life” which the man-made statues of yesteryear did not possess. Here are some of the idols of today.
- Redefinition of who God is – They reason that God surely isn’t the God of our bible. Surely He isn’t the only god out there.
- Redefinition of His character – They reason that He could not possibly allow anyone to go to Hell. Therefore, He is a God of love, who will find a way to pardon all men.
- Redefinition of sin – You know where this one is going. Surely God has changed His mind about homosexuality. It is so natural, so loving. Surely God would not sentence a man or woman to a life without sexual pleasure. And of course, we live in a different world than when the bible was penned.
- Redefinition of salvation – Well, believing in Jesus is the way to salvation, but we are so prone to sin. God could not possibly require us to repent of our misdeeds. We can’t help but sin, so I know He will understand.
You could name some other examples we see in our culture, especially related to the redefinition of sin. So many sins today are accepted as normal and okay behaviors, for no other reason but that man wants to define morality instead of believing God’s definition.
Ps 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.
There is only one way for us to know that we are on the right road. Let’s face the facts. Man has been an extremely flawed creation since his fall in the Garden of Eden. Everything man has tried to improve on, ignoring God’s word, has become a complete failure. We have seen many scriptures which show the folly of man’s wisdom.
The word for us today is this: the SSA man and woman cannot allow themselves to be deceived. If it doesn’t agree with God’s word, it is a creation from the mind of finite man. It will end in destruction and hopeless despair.
Prayer: Lord, keep us firmly fixed upon Your truth. Do not let us foolishly believe that mankind has somehow found a new or different way to live, and to find righteousness. Keep us safely on Your road to eternity.
