A Terrible Plight!
Read 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2
2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
Yesterday, we looked at wisdom and common sense, and thought about how sin is in conflict with both. This passage from 2 Thessalonians will give us some clues about how ignoring God’s wisdom can and will lead a man wrongly in life. The passage references the end times, and how mankind will be deceived by his false theology. But we can see the effects of the “lawless one” already being set in place. Our world today is moving toward a time when mankind will be very easily deceived, pulling them completely away from the wisdom and common sense we studied yesterday.
If a man isn’t grounded in truth from the word of God, he will have no defense against false teachings. He will be completely at the mercy of the lies of Satan and his forces. Do we not see a world that is slipping so far away from God that they will be easily deceived? Yes, we do. Not only that, many are already being deceived into believing things which are diametrically opposed to God and all of His truths. Look what happens to those who pull away from God:
- Evil is deceiving those who are perishing. What kinds of evil do we see happening today, which are deceiving man? Living together without benefit of marriage, having babies out of wedlock, the acceptance of homosexuality and abortion – (murder of the unborn) are a few examples. Because mankind wants these actions to be acceptable, they are easily deceived by the twisted words of the worldly “wise.”
- They perish because they refused to love the truth, which would save them. Men who want their evil ways to be accepted will refuse to love (or accept) the truth. Without truth, a man will believe what he wants to believe – therefore he will fall to deceptive words.
- The worst thing that happens comes next. If a man refuses to listen to God’s truth, God will “send them a powerful delusion.” How horrible it would be for a man to get so far away from God that God enables/helps him to be deceived. We don’t like to think that God would do such a thing, but here it is. It’s not the only example in the bible where that happened. Reread the account of Pharaoh’s deception.
- The final result of all this is that mankind will be condemned. It is a huge understatement to say that refusing to believe the truth and delighting in wickedness will bring a man’s life to a horrible ending.
Once again, let us be reminded that we must continue to stay on the right path. Homosexual behaviors are an abomination, whether we like to think like that or not. God said so, and we can soft-pedal that kind of thought if we wish, but it won’t change it. We are forgiven for our past sins in that regard, for which we are extremely grateful. But we must always remember that those behaviors will never be acceptable in God’s sight. We must stand firmly committed to God’s word and His truth. Many of our friends have fallen prey to the enemy’s deceptions. We must stand firm, and pray for all we know who are headed down that pathway to destruction.
2Th 2:13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
Prayer: Lord, keep us planted in Your truth. Remind us every day, many times each day, that Your word is the only trustworthy word that has ever existed. Cause Your truth to jump into our hearts each time we read from our bibles. Thank You again and again for revealing truth to us. It has led us to salvation. Do not allow our friends to go so far away from You that You would “send them a powerful delusion.” Please turn them around.
